Soldiers from the 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, stationed in Bori, Rivers State, yesterday arrested and thoroughly humiliated the paramount ruler of Yeghe community in Ogoniland, Barinaadaa Gbaranee.
Yeghe community, in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State has been a hotspot of army operations since they invaded the community in February in search of ex-agitator, Solomon Ndigbara, whom the military has since declared wanted.
Not less than 20 persons were killed in the military onslaught even though the army said nobody was killed.
The Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Capt. Eli Lazarus, confirmed the arrest of the Ogoni traditional ruler.
He however said the army “invited”Gbaranee for questioning concerning an investigation it was carrying out.
In a text message on Tuesday, Lazarus said, “The paramount ruler of Yeghe community, HRH Barinadaa Gbaranee, was invited by 2 Brigade Nigerian Army in connection with an ongoing investigation that relates to security within his domain. I assure you that he will return to his community as soon as investigation is completed.”
Angst by the action of the Nigerian Army, the Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers (COTRA) promptly voiced out their condemnation of what they termed the Gbaraanee’s “abduction” and called for his immediate release.
The Chairman of COTRA, King Suanu Baridam, in a statement issued afterwards said, “We consider the abduction of Chief T.D. Gbaranee a desecration of the highly respected traditional institution and strongly reject the humiliation of an Ogoni traditional stool by the Army.

"This is what the Nigerian Army did to the Yeghe Chief in Gokhana L.G.A in Ogoni area of Rivers state, who was later discovered at 2 Amphibious Brigade Bori Camp, Port Harcourt. HRH Chief Barinada Gbarale, whom the Army whisked away two days ago in a Commando abduction style on Bori road but for the alarm raised by the community.. This man was with us at the National Assembly, Senate and House of Reps before the Committees on Public Petitions and Army respectively and also testified against the Army over the Army invasion of his community that led to the killing of more than thirty people by the soldiers. He also testified against the Army in Port Harcourt when the House committee on Army visited Rivers state for a Fact finding during the Town Hall meeting at the Rivers state House of Assembly Complex.

Justice Liman of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has ordered his immediate release, hoping it will be obeyed. Some of us involved in this advocacy who signed this petition and facilitated this engagement from the civil rights community among other key advocacy actions, today are been hunted by various security agencies including the DSS, Secret police, Army etc. We must not harass free citizens. This is a presumed democracy."
