Buhari re-enacts Ahmadu Ahidjo and Gowon's pact: Muhammadu Buhari and Paul Biya toasting over Bakassi |
Muhammadu Buhari and Paul Biya this week toasted over the ceding of Bakassi to the Cameroons. At the peak of the Biafra-Nigeria War, in order to effectively enforce the blockade of Biafra, Yakubu Gowon ceded a part of Biafra (Bakassi Penunsula) to the Republic of Cameroon.
Buhari this week visited Biya to reassure him that Bakassi is his, if he would help assist him in blockading Biafra in the event of a second looming war between Biafra and Nigeria.
Buhari stated that he has no intention to retake Bakassi.
This is despite the fact that the indigenous people of Bakassi do not consider themselves Cameroonians.
What is more is the fact that Buhari chose July 29th, the day General Aguiyi Ironsi was assassinated by Hausa-Fulani soldiers including Buhari, to visit Cameroon for this re-enactment of pact.
