Tension in Owerri as locals attack Hausa Community over Rochas Okorocha's anti-Igbo policies

There was heavy tension  in Owerri, the capital of Imo State couple of hours ago. According to Prince Ikem Obioma, an IgbereTV correspondent in Owerri, the riot in Owerri was protesting the demolition of illegal structures by the Rochas Okorocha's government through the government agency (ENTRACO).

All shops and banks around Douglas Road, Ama Hausa, Mbaise Road axis were under lock with heavy concentration of armed security personnel.

The problem started after the state government gave the traders at Ekeonuwa market and environs a deadline date to evacuate the area or face demolition. This the traders union saw as a discriminatory and anti-igbo as they insisted that the governor should first of all demolish Ama Hausa (Hausa community), which is also along the busy road  before their business spots.

The governor yesterday demolished some illegal structures belonging to the Igbo traders, but allegedly spared the structures belonging to the Hausa community. The Igbo traders were unhappy with this development which they considered unfair and a display of double standard by the state government. As a result, some irate youths were said to have busted into the Hausa market, leading to the riot.

Although things appear to have normalised, it has however revealed the level of apprehension in the state over Governor Okorocha's anti-Biafran stance and his favouritism of Hausa-Fulani residents of Imo State.
