Editorial: Alarming resurgence of Boko Haram under Buhari as he gallivants across the globe while the country BURNS!

Ever since that Boko Haram chilling battle cry - "Sai Buhari!" on June 2nd, 2015, the terrorists appear to have been energised by a sudden and 'strange' surge of inertia. It is no longer in doubt that Boko Haram has gained more impetus under the administration of Muhammadu Buhari. Days after Buhari came to power a suicide bomber used his campaign slogan "Sai Buhari" as a battle cry before denoting an IED that killed dozens of people. Boko Haram once nominated Buhari as their negotiator with the Nigeria's government. Buhari also kicked against attack on Boko Haram is offensive against the entire northern Nigeria.

Buhari's utter incompetence or tacit collaboration  has led to the increase of Boko Haram attacks. The first major policy Buhari carried out on assumption of office was to pulldown military checkpoints on Nigeria's roads. That singular act catalyzed free movement of Boko Haram terrorists, who capitalised on the loophole to spread their tentacles.

Despite the huge outcry that followed this daft or complicit directive of Buhari, it took him two weeks to okay the return of soldiers on the roads.

Secondly, Buhari released almost 200 Boko Haram detainees. Following this moves Boko Haram, which was receding at the end of Goodluck Jonathan' administration resurged with escalation of attacks. At the time of this editorial almost 2000 people have been killed in 50 days, equating to average of 40 deaths per day.

While he gallivants across the globe, the world the country he was supposed to manage burns. It has gotten so worse that no hour passes without one news about Boko Haram attack or the other. Buhari has been accused of spreading Boko Haram like a virus. By the time you will be reading  this, you will be surprised to find that the chronology of Boko Haram attack published here-under may require updating.

Boko Haram is waxing stronger in their bid to overrun Nigeria and Buhari appears hopeless and clueless on how to effectively tackle them. In his own words Buhari admitted his inability to quench the renewed killing orgy, by suggesting that Boko Haram's allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) has made them stronger.

There have suggestion that the terrorists have been given freehand to operate inorder to justify the necessity to grant them amnesty. This may not be far of as Buhari shares the same Islamic ideology of spreading sharia across Nigeria as Boko Haram.

Buhari shares the same Islamic ideology of spreading sharia across Nigeria as Boko Haram.

According to a commentator, "Buhari’s administration is clearly not making any progress in the war against Boko Haram terrorists. The Buhari administration has simply been grandstanding about taming Boko Haram; all words no action. Running to the leaders of Chad and Niger Republic for help is not a bad idea. Goodluck Jonathan did the same; but it cannot put an end to suicide bombings in our country.

"Troops from the MNJTF won’t come into Maiduguri or Damaturu to help stop suicide bombings. They can only help battle cross-border infiltration. The trip to G7 Summit by President Muhammadu Buhari where this same issue was tabled was obviously a waste of time. Deep down, the G7 guys are not bothered one bit about the war against Boko Haram. Buhari should be moving close to Russia and China.

While he gallivants across the globe, the world the country he was supposed to manage burns. It has gotten so worse that no hour passes without one news about Boko Haram attack or the other.
"Aside from moving the Command and Control Centre of the war to Maiduguri, Buhari has so far not done anything special in the war against Boko Haram in the last 36 days. This is basically because he has no blue print for tackling the crisis. While campaigning for the Presidency, Buhari simply played politics with the Boko Haram crisis. He did not have any Think Tank working on strategies for taming the monster. The movement of the C and C to Maiduguri did not impact positively on the war as seen from the data below. The movement itself is an archaic war technique. There is clearly no sense in this. Buhari simply wants to jeopadise the Command and Control Centre.

"The United States did not move the Pentagon to the Gulf region before decapitating Iraq troops. Just as I clearly stated in an earlier piece, the suicide bombers are within the country, manufacturing and using Improvised Explosive Devices. They are using petrol and gas cylinders, all obtained within the country. Intelligence gathering and technology are vital for detecting and curtailing the deadly activities of these suicide bombers. Community policing is also key. We need to put our internal security in order instead of just running to G7 leaders, Chad, Niger, Cameroon and the rest of them. Of course, leadership matters a great deal if we are to curtail terrorism. Buhari needs to be told that occupying a position of authority does not make a man a leader. It is the ability to inspire others to achieve a positive goal that makes a man a leader.

Apart from the documented murdered victims, hundreds of wounded persons and thousands newly displaced, all from a surprising fresh onslaught by Boko Haram on scores of communities and towns in at least six northern states of Nigeria, the questions on the lips of Nigerians monitoring the carnage would all meet at some point. Was the inaugural speech of President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2015 in which he promised to stamp out Boko Haram shortly, just a brilliant prose with no work plan for execution?
