Buhari sends in Boko Haram inmates to Anambra under heavy military protection |
In defiance of the wish of the people General Muhammadu Buhari bent on his islamisation agenda has sent in hardened Boko Haram prisoners to a very low security prison in Anambara state. Reports from Anamabra State has it that heavily armed soldiers two nights ago escorted at least 47 dreaded Boko Haram convicts to Anambra State moving them straight to Ekwuobia Prison.
The action was taken despite the outcry that greeted the plan, with protests rocking the state over the weekend. The move was also opposed by the state governor Willie Obiano.
Ekwulobia prison is not a maximum security prison and there are strong and genuine fears that the presence of the terrorists might attract attacks from the Islamist terrorists who have made parts of Nigeria’s Muslim-dominated North-East virtually ungovernable since 2009.
The move is likened to Buhari placing a beacon for the terrorists to follow. The mere fact that everyone already knows where the terrorists are being taken to, it is only a matter of time before the strike.
There are maximum security prison in other parts of the country such as the Kirikiri in Lagos State, but Buhari chose to signpost Boko Haram to the Eastern region to continue the onslaught and intimidation of Biafrans.
A statement released by Obiano's media aides stated that "Obiano’s many objections among others are: Anambra is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria in the past one year and that the arrival of these radical elements in any part of the state would disrupt this peace and lead to a new regime of a different kind of fear in the state;
“That Ekwulobia Prisons is not a Maximum Security Prison and not suitable as holding place for convicted terrorists because experience shows that terrorists and terror suspects are kept in strongly fortified and isolated places;
“That Ekwulobia Prisons has a capacity to hold 85 inmates and at the moment there are 135 inmates in the prison; therefore there is no space for new prisoners”;
“That unlike other locations where the terror-convicts are held in sparsely populated areas which makes their isolation from the people easy, Ekwulobia is a densely populated town. There is a very high risk of contact between these radical prisoners and the civilian population with an avoidable danger;
“That the relocation of these prisoners to Anambra may not have paid adequate attention to the sensibilities of the country, especially the fact that some ethnic populations have suffered the most from the activities of these convicts across the North” and so on.
