The Northernisation of the Nigerian Army and military installations: Why the North want to remain in power

The Northernisation of Nigerian Army and military installations: Why the North want to remain in power
Daily the core reasons why the Northern Oligarchy wishes to perpetually cling onto power in Nigeria emerges. The North wish to remain in position of power because of the numerous advantages it gives them to dominate every facet of the geographic expression called Nigeria. The own virtually all the oil blocks, the control large vast of farmlands commandeered from original owners, the control the borders and ports and most importantly they dominate the Nigeria Army – an instrument they have effectively utilised to perpetuate their dominance and control.

Analysis of basic military installations of the Nigerian Army carried out by The Biafran exposes the decadal Northenisation of the Nigerian Army.

Related Stories:

The worst hit region is the South East with a mere Division that has no heavy military equipment. It is purely a caricature of a military division. Out of six army divisions 3 are located in the north, 2 in the South West and only 1 in the South East. Rubbing salt to injury, two out of the 3 in the north are mechanised (Kaduna and Maiduguri [possibly armoured]) and the last at Jos is an armoured division. Lagos and Ibadan divisions are al mechanised, however, 82 Division in Enugu is a mere composite division that can hardly with other divisions.

Mechanized division is one that is infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for transport and combat. Mechanized infantry is distinguished from motorized infantry in that its vehicles provide a degree of protection from hostile fire, as opposed to "soft-skinned" wheeled vehicles (trucks or jeeps) for motorized infantry. Armoured division is one where troops are carried by equipped with armoured personnel carriers (APCs).

Appallingly, out of 140 General Officers Commanding (GOC) that has headed the various Nigerian Army divisions, only 8 where from the South East, whereas the North produced 61, the and the South West 36.

As if that was not enough, no South Easterner has ever been allowed to become the GOC of 82 Division in Enugu (See table below). Whereas majority of the GOC’s from the 3 northern divisions are northerners, and a substantial number of the GOC’s of the two divisions in the South West are South-westerners, the southeast was unabashedly denied such privileges in 82 Division – with northerners and south-westerners (48 and 41% of the GOCs respectively) calling the shots. This in a country where someone scoring 2 from the North would be preferred to join the Unity schools to another scoring above 100 from the southeast, under the guise of Federal Character System. Yet in the army, the Federal Character disappears completely.

The story is the same with the Nigerian Air Force. The Air Force is currently made up of four Commands namely: Tactical Air Command with headquarters in Makurdi, Mobility Command with Headquarters in Yenagoa, Training Command with headquarters in Kaduna and Logistics Command with headquarters in Lagos.
Presented below is the distribution of army divisions in Nigeria and the chronicle of command since inception:
1 DIVISION NIGERIAN ARMY
Headquarters 1 Division Nigerian Army is located in Kaduna. It was established during the civil war. It is charged with the responsibility of securing its Area of Responsibility (AOR) covering the North Western flank of Nigeria and also ensuring that the borders located in its AOR are secured. The division is a mechanized infantry with affiliated combat support and combat service support units.
1 Division Nigerian Army known as "the first" - formerly known as the "First Infantry Division"- was born out of the former "1st Brigade" of the Nigerian Army which was later christened, "1 Area Command".
