Nigeria: Destined for war?

Nigeria: Destined for war?
A GOOD brother of mine just gave me a copy of Graham Allison’s Destined For War-Can America and China Escape Thucydide’s Trap and it is a very illuminating read. Alison in the great work looked at the challenge a rising China poses to the United States and the possibility of a war between the two being a natural sequence. In an interview with NPR’s Robert Siegel on May 29, Allison described Thucydide’s as “when a rising power threatens to displace a ruling power, one sees inherent structural stress that makes conflict likely.

Northern youths’ genocidal threat: avoiding the repetition of 1966 anti-igbo pogrom in Northern Nigeria and 1994 Rwandan genocide
(Intersociety & SBCHROs, Nigeria: 8th June 2017)-The present Federal Government of Nigeria and its security forces as well as all elected and appointed public office holders and other key political actors in Southeast Nigeria must proactively and preventively avoid the repetition of the 1966 anti Igbo pogrom in Northern Nigeria in 1966 in which “between 45,000 and 50,000 civilians of former Eastern Nigeria were killed in Northern Nigeria and other parts of Nigeria from May 1966 and December 1967”. The 45,000 to 50,000 citizens that were massacred are dominated by citizens of the Igbo Ethnic Nationality. The pre pogrom panics and its poorly managed early warnings further generated or forced 1.627,743 (one million, six hundred & twenty seven thousand, seven hundred and forty three) Easterners dominated by Igbo citizens residing in different parts of Nigeria to return home or become internally displaced persons. A good number of them crossed int’l borders and became refugees.

Between Biafra and restructuring Nigeria [The way forward] - UN Expert

Between Biafra and restructuring Nigeria [The way forward] -  UN Expert
It is the temptation of war to punish, the task of policy to construct. Power may sit in judgment, but statesmen must look to the future. —Henry Kissinger, former United States Secretary of State

Nation-building is hard, but it need not be as difficult as we make it in Nigeria. Nation-building is also intentional. It doesn’t happen by accident. The real test is in the leadership and the actions that create a real spirit of nationhood, and the willingness of every stakeholder to build a united, stable and cohesive nation.

General Tukur Yusuf Buratai: ICC-bound Nigerian Chief of Army Staff
In a 2017 episode of Jackanory produced by the Nigerian military, the Nigerian army has described how their officers and men allegedly escaped IPOB/MASSOB ambush on the 30th of May, 2017. The internationally-discredited Nigerian Army, notorious for killing unarmed civilians released a statement about the recently held sit-at-home protest ordered by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB)  on May 30 to honour fallen heroes of Biafra.

Intactness of Kanu’s bail conditions & emptiness of Nigerian Army in policing public assemblies In Nigeria
(Intersociety, Onitsha Nigeria: 4th June 2017)-The leadership of Int’l Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law is not surprised at the negative reactions of the Federal Government of Nigeria and its Nigerian Army as well as some unfriendly media practitioners sympathetic to the present Federal Government and its suppressive and annihilative policies against the Igbo Ethnic Nationality in Nigeria. The unfolding negative reactions of the referenced are clearly borne out of huge successes that followed the 30th May 2017 sit-at-home protest organized by the leaderships of IPOB and MASSOB, which recorded 95% success in the targeted areas and cities in Igbo Land and other Igbo populated and business areas in Nigeria.

Perhaps Kate Henshaw who is recently troubled by the map of Biafra may not have heard of the Eastern Nigeria Consultative Assembly. This was the powerful Eastern Nigeria group alongside the  Advisory Committee of Chiefs and Elders mapped out Biafran territories and mandated General Odimegwu Ojukwu, the then military governor of Eastern Nigeria to declare the independence of the Republic of Biafra.
“WE, THE CHIEFS, Elders and Representatives of Eastern Nigeria, gathered at this Joint Meeting of the Advisory Committee of Chiefs and Elders and the Consultative Assembly do solemnly declare as follows:  a)MANDATE His Excellency  Lt.- Col. Nigeria may have lost her last chance to quell the surging agitation for the restoration of the Republic of Biafra, with the rejection of the bill to establish South-East Development Commission. This development is coming on the heals of the arrogant exclusion of the South East from a major railway construction where every part of Nigeria was very much covered except the South East.

  • "The success of the lockdown was mainly because the Igbo had been shut out of national affairs." - Rep EJ Agbonayinma (PDP, Edo)

Tuesday’s successful lockdown of the Southeast is indicative of a massive discontent with the Nigerian federation, Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-cultural group warned, yesterday. While the group warned that the issues raised by the lockdown must be addressed in order not to foreclose a negotiated settlement of the Nigerian question, Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, traced the success of the lockdown to what he described as the hypocrisy of the Nigerian elite class and the tribal tendencies of President Muhammadu Buhari.
