A botched attempt to overthrow Burundian President, Pierre Nkurunziza ended in failure on Friday as coup leaders admitted defeat and were arrested or forced to go on the run from loyalist troops.

The Burundian Army has announced that the attempted coup against President Pierre Nkurunziza  by a dissident army chief has failed. The army are currently mopping up the capital in search of the dissident soldiers.

General Godefroid Niyombare, the Burundian general trying to overthrow the government of President Pierre Nkurunziza, Wednesday ordered the closure of Bujumbura airport and land borders. This is an attempt to stop President Nkurunziza, who is on his way back to Burundi from Tanzania.

A renegade Burundian army general has announced a military takeover in the country. Using a private radio station, General Godefroid Niyombareh, who was fired by President Pierre Nkurunziza as the country's intelligence chief in February declared he is taking control of Burundi.
