How Yorubas are courting death and decimation

About this time two years ago, Boko Haram was unleashing its onslaught on Biafran Christians in the northern part of Nigeria. Churches were being attacked; bus stations and markets predominated by Biafrans were always objects of incessant attacks. However, the Muslim North were resoundingly silent. Hardly was there any voice from any prominent or lower level Islamic Hausa-Fulani leader or politician condemning such genocidal attacks. Having killed many of them, some Biafrans relocated further south, others restrategised and adopted certain survival tricks.

Soon after, the tide slowly shifted. As Boko Haram could no longer find easy Biafran targets, they turned their guns on their kith and kin - perceived to be blocking their southward movement. They realised there were some ‘fake’ Muslims leaving among them who are hampering their south-bound advance to annihilate and Islamise Biafra. This was what no Muslim in the north ever anticipated. That ‘their boys’ who were instituted to make Nigeria ‘ungovernable’ would end up making the North ‘unlivable’. Presently, no day passes without one condemnation of Boko Haram or the other from one northern politician or elite. Although they only condemned Boko Haram for killing fellow Muslims and not for killing Biafrans or other infidels (Stop killing people in Mosques - Sanusi advises Boko Haram).

Very surprisingly, the Yorubas in the southwest of Nigeria have failed to learn from what befell the ‘moderate’ Muslims in the North, who tacitly supported Boko Haram’s cleansing of Biafrans and Christians in the North. Despite recent actions of Boko Haram against fellow Muslims, Yorubas are embracing Boko Haram with open arms. They are prancing up and down with the brains behind Boko Haram, believing that they are traditionally Muslims that would be welcomed with open arms when Nigeria ‘eventually’ gets Islamised. Yorubas forget that core northern Muslims do not regard them as true Muslims. In fact, A Hausa/Fulani Muslim cannot worship in a mosque headed by a Yoruba Alfa. This is because the northern Muslims holds Yoruba Muslims in disdain, viewing them as adulterated Muslims (Belarabe). This view of Yoruba Muslims could be traced back to the origin of Islam in Yorubaland. Whereas the Muslim North got their Islamic teachings from Arabs through the Sahara trade routes, Yorubas were Islamised by Malian itinerant traders, hence Islam in Ancient Yoruba is referred to as Esin Imale (religion of the Malians).

Needless to say that when Boko Haram eventually berths in Yoruba, if they venture vote Muhammadu Buhari, who had sworn to make sure every part of Nigeria is Islamised (Buhari calls for total Sharia in Nigeria -AFP), then they will understand the meaning of calamity and massacre. What is currently happening to ‘moderate’ Muslims in Borno and Adamawa would be a joke compared to what will befell the Yorubas.
