The Northern Nigeria has never been as balkanised as it is today. The region is slowly falling back to the pre Sokoto Caliphate status quo, after the decline of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, which had held captive most northern ethnic nationalities. This brief period of freedom of the northern ethnic group at the demise of the Kanem-Bornu empire was short-lived as the Fulanis overran the territories and once again held the lily-livered northern minorities and the Hausas, captive, under the Fulani-founded Sokoto Caliphate.
