The presidential candidate of United Progressives Party (UPP) in the last general elections, Chief Chekwas Okorie, said that the worsening socio-economic situation in the South East and South South is responsible for the continued Biafra agitation by IPOB.

Presidential candidate of the United Progressives Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie has opted to lead the way in any move to prevent the current protest of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) from boiling over.

But that is on the condition that the Federal Government must not only take the initiative of inviting him into the matter, but show its readiness for a negotiated settlement of the agitation of the group seeking for the carving out of a separate state of Biafra, from Nigeria, and willingness to give Ndigbo a chance to be Nigerians.

"The exit clause that I advocated for was nothing out of proportion. There is an exit clause in Ethiopian constitution. We also have an exit clause in the constitution of Canada; that is why every 10years, there is always a referendum to review their being together.

The one that took place in Scotland sometime ago is an example of where there was a referendum to opt-out of United Kingdom! How did Britain handle it, they made more concession to the Scottish people and most Scottish felt with the concession there was no need opting out of a bigger union and they voted in favour of the union."

Chief Chekwas Okorie, founder of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), in this interview, calls on President Buhari administration to be creative in addressing Biafra agitation issue.

The National Chairman of United Peoples Par­ty (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie has stated that Ndigbo have lost their sting in the affairs of Nigeria and must strive to regain it. 

Chief Okorie made this declaration at the weekend in Awka, Anambra State, during the Igbo Lecture Series organized by Ohaneze Ndigbo to mark the 2014 Igbo Day celebration. He blasted the unsolicited endorsement of Jonathan’s re-election bid by the Igbo, stating that endorsing the President without any negotiation or concrete promise to the people of the South-East amounts to sycophancy. Chief Okorie's  address received a loud ovation from the audience.
