Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont says the region has won the right to statehood following Sunday's contentious referendum which was marred by violence.

He said the door had been opened to a unilateral declaration of independence.

Catalonia’s long-awaited and bitterly controversial referendum on independence from Spain will be finally held on 1 October, the regional government announced on Friday, triggering yet another political and judicial showdown with Madrid. And independence from Spain will be declared within 48 hours of a yes vote.

Catalonia will declare independence "immediately" if the region's voters opt to separate from Spain in a referendum, its ruling coalition 

Hundreds of Basques turned out on the streets on Saturday in support of Catalonia and its planned referendum on independence from Madrid, an ambition long fought for by Basque separatists.
