The NYSC grand rip-off! Fire Brig-General Jonhson Olawumi now!!

Brig-General Jonhson Olawumi the NYSC Director General rips-off corp members
In line with the continued rip-off-the-people policies of various agencies of the Nigerian Government, the  National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) recently introduced an obnoxious  policy where prospective Corp members would have to print their call up letters online at a whooping cost of four thousand Naira (N4,000).
Yes N4000 to print out a one paged document!

This runs contrary to the essence of the establishment of the agency, and considering that there is a budget for printing call-up letters and distributing to graduates through their respective universities one would have expected the same budget to cater for the online printing of the letters as they would actually become cheaper.

NYSC was established soon after the Biafran-Nigerian War to foster unity and cohesion among the many ethnic nationalities in the geographic region called Nigeria. This was carried out through the posting of fresh graduates to serve in other parts of the country not native to them, thus helping them to know new places, socialize, meet and interact with people from other cultures. The government was however to take care of the corp members throughout the one year service period they were to serve the country, and cushion every hardship that may come their way.

It was therefore shocking that the leadership of the NYSC led by Brig-General Jonhson Olawumi would have the mind to extort money from prospective corps members over a statutory responsibility of the agency. Perhaps he was towing the line of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Abba Moro, who got away with billion naira rip-off and deaths of a coupke of job seekers during the last recruitment exercise of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

Cross section of NYSC Call Members
n their defence the NYSC, yesterday, stated that the N4,000 fee imposed on prospective corps members for printing of call-up letters on-line was for services and infrastructure to be deployed by the collaborating firm. The Director General of NYSC, Brig-General Jonhson Olawumi, said the money was neither for the scheme nor the corps producing institutions as it was being alleged by some quarters.

“NYSC, in a bid to improve its operations in line with global cutting-edge technology, went into partnership with a private company, Messrs. SIDMACH Technologies Nigeria Limited, for the full computerisation of the mobilisation process.”

This is obviously a very lame excuse to cover a fraudulent behaviour. Olawumi cannot deny he doesn’t have a substantial share in the N4000 naira per corp member that would rake in billions of naira. Why would the corp members pay for services NYSC was statutorily responsible for. Or does Olawumi trying to suggest the agency doesn’t have money to print call up letters for corp members anymore? In that case the scheme should be scrapped as fresh graduates without any means of income could not be expected to pay for services of the NYSC.

People must rise to ask for Olawumi’s sack. He has bitten more than he can chew. This is a grave extortion that must not be accepted. President Goodluck Jonathan should Fire Brig-General Jonhson Olawumi now!!
