NATO Re-positions: Establishes Spearhead Attack Force to confront Russia increasing influence

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) today re-positioned its stance from a passive defensive position to an active offensive position, to combat growing Russian influence in the Baltic region. At NATO summit in Wales, NATO announced the formation of the very high readiness Spearhead Force that could quickly deploy to various parts of the world.

Announcing this, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said, the "Spearhead Force would be made up of several thousand land troops ready to deploy within a few days. The troops would be backed by air, sea and special forces support, he said, with a command and control center and extra equipment in Eastern Europe."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Friday the U.K. would commit 3,500 troops to a new Spearhead Force. Speaking at the opening of the second and final day of summit talks among leaders of the 28-nation alliance, Cameron said the multinational high-readiness force should be able to deploy anywhere in the world in two to five days.

The force is set to be formally established on Friday. Cameron described the force as part of a plan to reassure Eastern European allies that the NATO pledge of collective self-defense applies to them as “Russia tramples illegally over Ukraine.”

The force would have a headquarters in Poland, and stockpiles of equipment such as ammunition pre-positioned in countries seen as potentially vulnerable, he said.

Map showing increasing NATO spread towards Russia
The end of the cold war and the collapse of the Soviet Union, availed NATO an opportunity to spread its flanks towards Russia. NATO's expanding towards Russia has apparently troubled Russia's Vladimir Putin., who is making efforts to disrupt the expansion.
Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine has been as a result of what Russia perceived as the growing threat of NATO towards its borders. US and the European Union were instrumental to the overthrow of Ukrainian former President, Viktor Yanukovych and consequent session of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine from Ukraine, leading to the near-civil war situation in the country.
