Michael Leapman the first British journalist to tell the truth about Biafra |
Michael Leapman was the first British journalist to tell the truth about the appalling starvation of besieged Biafra in 1968 ("British interests, Nigerian tragedy", Section 2, 4 January). He has been writing for national newspapers for more than 50 years. He has written several books about the press and broadcasting, including the first biography of Rupert Murdoch. He was named Campaigning Journalist of the Year in 1968 for his reports in The Sun on the Biafra civil war and famine. Others followed suit until just about the whole of Fleet Street condemned the British government's support of Lagos.
