Appease deities or risk decline and disasters – Yoruba leader warns Nigerians
Ganiyu Adams, the National Coordinator of the Oodu’a Peoples Congress (OPC), a leading military wing of the Yoruba socio-politcal group has issued a warning to Nigerians on gratification of gods and deities.

He said government and citizens risk disastrous incidents if they continued to do away with deities associated which certain regions, states, lands, family and resources.

Adams stated this at the African festival with OGA held today at the Creative Arts Theatre in University in Lagos (UNILAG).

Speaking on preservation of culture and tradition, Adams advised the nation’s leaders, groups, parents and guardians to ensure the young ones are lectured on their roots.

“If we continue to forget our roots, then no matter the intellectual wealth we acquire, we may not be able to move this country forward.”

The OPC leader lamented the “demonization” of the country’s traditions, saying “we will find it hard to progress if we abandon what we should do.

“The ocean, for instance, has spirits that must be appeased. If we do not do this, then we should blame ourselves for whatever disaster happens.”

“Other natural resources like air, trees, soil etc have deities and we must not because of religion and civilization ignore them.”

Speaking further, Adams reiterated his call on President Muhammadu Buhari to implement the recommendations of national conference convened by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to him, some structures in Nigeria were deficient and as such cannot effectively function.

His words: “The recommendation of the 2014 National conference has to be implemented. If we don’t , there is no way we can move forward.”

“No matter how hard-working Buhari is, no matter how prudent he is, regardless the spirit of corruption he wants to fight, without a good structure, he will have problems.

“Everyone must be made to participate freely, allowing every state to develop at their own pace, therefore reaching and satisfying the needs of more citizens,” he said.

Adams expressed delight that the event took place in UNILAG were many prominent Nigerians have their children, noting that if the institution imbibe such cultural promotion, the entire nation is likely to key into the initiative.
