Wicked "Ego Orji" Extortion: Governor Obiano STOP this criminal extortion of tenants by Onitsha landlords now!
The Biafran has gathered that Onitsha Landlords have devised criminal means of extorting money from their tenants. The Governor of Anambra State is called upon by The Biafran to put an immediate stop this menace that is increasing hardship among already hard-hit residents of the state. The Biafran got this report from one of our readers Okechukwu Chikezie who wanted alert the public on this menace that is rearing its head in Onitsha before spreads.

This criminal extortion is already very rampant in Awada, Nkpor, Obosi, 33 estate and others. Onitsha Landlords have constituted themselves into a syndicate of extortion such as the Awada Landlords Association, Nkpor Landlords Association e.tc. Their main objective is to strategize on how to wriggle more money out of their tenants.

Currently, most landlords in Ontisha have begun to impose an illegal levy of up to one hundred thousand naira , called EGO-OJI ( COLA MONEY) on their tenants or tenant to be. This is in addition to rent and agency fees the tenants are forced to cough out. In some remote parts of Onitsha, the levy could get up to N50,000. The landlords are so brazen in this criminal act that it has now become a pre-condition for tenant to be. in order to get an apartment in Onitsha.

Rents in Onitsha ranges from N180,000 to N450, 000 per annum, with most landlords often demanding two years rent in advance payment.

Another extortion model is the sell of forms to would be tenants, which the landlords uses to rake in money from people. Thousands of forms which is usually sold between N1000 and N2000 (non refundable) could be distributed to potential tenants of a few block of flats. With these the landlords rake in money from people they know has no chance of getting the flats. In addition tenants are forced to pay the agents and lawyers for documentation.

This is pushing cost of living into the high ends in Onitsha and people are suffering. The government of Anambra State should look into this matter before it degenerates. There is always a limit to what people could take. The residents of Onitsha are approaching that limit.
