The Nigeria minister of state for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro has stated that there can never be a republic within a Nigeria. Addressing journalists at the end of a two-day familiarisation tour of the Western Naval Command’s area of responsibility, Obanikoro assured Nigerians that the federal government had all that was needed to address the current security situation in the country and was taking adequate steps to address it. Part of the steps taken according to him, included the injection of adequate fund into the military with a view to acquiring equipment that would raise its performance.


“The commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure this has started. We are having massive injection of funds into acquisition of equipment that will raise the performance level of our military across the board; Navy, AirForce, Army and even the Police, to meet the challenges of the future.

The question that propped up on my mind on seeing the above statement was if Obanikoro was drunk when he made the statement or he was so blind he is yet to see the handwriting on the wall.
Nigeria is finished and is passing through the last phase of extinction. All the ingredients for the break up of Nigeria is already in place. As The Biafran elucidated in the well articulated article "That story of Yugoslavia - the future of Nigeria, where the issues that led to the ultimate breakup of Yugoslavia was examined and shown to be already replete in Nigeria.

With Nigeria soldiers' morale at its ebb, leading them to run from battlefront, the end is indeed nigh.

Of course inept politicians like Obanikoro are usually the last to see political situations in their country. And when the flood of change comes it usually sweeps them away, as it did Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello and co, as it did Aguiyi Ironsi, and recently as it did Muamar Gadaffi and family, Mubarak, and as it is currently doing in Iraq.

According to Obanikoro, “the madness [of Boko Haram decalring Islamic Caliphate and sacking soldiers] we are witnessing today is something that is temporary. And be rest assured that we have all it takes to make it as temporary as it takes. There can never be a republic within a republic. The national conference which just ended had all responsible and reasonable Nigerians saying that we are going to stay together, live together in peace and develop our country.

However I tell Obanikoro that despite what he sees as Boko Haram's temporary madness, the terrorist's next line of action, having successfully declared an Islamic Republic in the Northeast is to march to Abuja, to depose the government. When that happens, I hope Obanikoro will have time to put on his pants before fleeing town.

History always has a way of punishing the likes of Obanikoro in their failure to proactively discern the future.
